LOGOS LAB

Academic Editing and Consultation.

Logos Lab is a consultation and editorial service for academic scholars who want to improve their written work and get manuscript drafts ready for publication. You may have a manuscript already and want an expert set of eyes to help tighten it up. Or you might have a mass of research material, notes, and a few good hunches, but don't know how to get started. Logos Lab is here for  those needs and everywhere in between

Consultation and developmental editing is more than just a means to a great manuscript. It’s also a way to outsource a lot of the hard, unrewarding, and sometimes discouraging work that academic writing entails, so that you can better do what you do best: thinking about your research without encumbrances. You know your work, the connections are clear to you; and yet, figuring out how to shape that knowledge into a discourse that others can understand it takes time and mental energy. Logos Lab serves to unperplex the compositional process by offering a clear roadmap towards a finished manuscript, and to eliminate the hassle of puzzling over paragraphs and sentences so that you can better focus on the core of your scholarly craft.

WHO IS LOGOS LAB

Z.D.R. Mackin, Ph.D Columbia University

I am an editor, with experience in several publications and continuing editorial projects. I have assisted individuals in the development of dissertations into books, helped shepherd journal articles into publisher-ready drafts, and currently work with a research team on a multi-year project funded by the European Research Council. With a Humanities background (Ph.D. in Medieval Literature, Columbia University in the City of New York), I am especially interested in issues of language and prosody, with the goal of producing work that narrates as much as it informs. I have years of experience teaching at university, where I have developed editorial strategies for assisting young writers to communicate effectively and critically.

FIELDS OF EXPERTISE

The center of my scholarly knowledge is in the literary humanities, especially regarding the European canon, with a supplementary specialization in history. Currently based in Japan, I have broadened my knowledge to include the literature/culture of East Asia. Some of the fields I have worked in  as editor include Japanese history, intellectual history, architecture, history of engineering, urban studies, history of psychiatry, Ottoman history, and 20th century political activism. I have helped usher articles towards publication in academic journals, academic publishing houses, and also trade journals.

Communication theorist Marshall McLuhan once noted that "the medium is the message." Just as important as inspiring research is how to tell the story to a wider audience. D.R. Mackin is a highly capable editor who can help  authors to focus on their key message and to tell a compelling story.
